Vascular Health Screening
The New Mexico Heart Institute is pleased to offer coronary artery calcium scoring. This Ultrasound imaging study is simple, painless, and inexpensive. It is the only screening test available that can accurately detect the presence of heart disease.
What is the Vascular Health Screening test?
NMHI’s vascular screening uses harmless and painless ultrasound imaging to detect the presence or absence of aneurysms and peripheral vascular disease.
This simple screening looks for four things:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- The presence of an aneurysm, or ballooning of the artery, with an abdominal aortic ultrasound scan (the same procedure used on pregnant women)
- The presence of carotid artery blockage – which can cause strokes – with a carotid artery ultrasound scan
- Any arterial blockage in the legs by looking at ankle and brachial indices
Is the Vascular Health Screening safe?
It couldn’t be safer. It’s the same type of ultrasound imaging used with pregnant women. No radiation is used.
It’s also the simple, painless and inexpensive way to test for arterial aneurysms and peripheral vascular disease.
The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes in total to register at the front desk, complete a brief evaluation, and have the testing done. You lie down on an imaging table and then the technician uses an ultrasound probe to “visualize” the arteries in your neck and abdomen. The technician will also check your blood pressure on your arms and legs.
Who should have the Vascular Health Screening test?
Anyone whose doctor recommends it, and anyone who is over the age of 45 and may have such risk factors as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, previous tobacco use, obesity or a family history of cardiovascular disease.
