Sleep apnea treatment

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the muscles that support the soft tissues in the throat, such as your tongue and soft palate, temporarily relax. When these muscles relax, the airway is narrowed or closed, and breathing is momentarily cut off. This condition is seen in all age groups, but the frequency increases with age and weight gain.

Possible sleep apnea treatment can include:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP mask)
  • Decreasing alcohol consumption
  • Oral devices
  • Sleeping adjustments
  • Surgery
  • Weight loss

A sleep study may be required to determine if snoring is due to OSA. Visit our Sleep Study Center for more information at lovelace.com/services/sleep-medicine

Ear & Hearing

Dizziness

Lightheadedness is a feeling that you are about to faint or "pass out." Although you may feel dizzy, you do not feel as though you or  your surroundings are moving. Lightheadedness can occur from standing up too quickly, heat exposure, dehydration, extreme physical exertion, or medication side effects

Vertigo is the sensation of self-movement or the movement of your surroundings – a spinning sensation. Vertigo . is commonly caused by a problem with the way balance works in the inner ear, although it can also be caused by problems in certain parts of the brain. Causes of vertigo may include: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) – where certain head movements trigger vertigo.

Hearing Aids

Over 22 million people in the United States suffer from hearing loss. Hearing instruments can help restore your quality of life. It is often described as head noise such as: ringing, whooshing, roaring, a steam engine, crickets, buzzing or hissing. There are many more auditory and nonauditory reasons for tinnitus, but it is medically proven that tinnitus is somehow the result of the brain’s reaction to impaired hearing.

Snoring

Forty-five percent of normal adults snore occasionally and twenty-five percent are habitual snorers. Problem snoring is more frequent in males and overweight people and usually worsens with age. An evaluation of the nose, mouth, throat, palate, and neck can help determine what the cause of snoring may be.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
